New York jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring a single run. San Francisco threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. The win went to Carlos Zambrano(9-10) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Carlos Marmol earned the save, his 16th. C.C. Sabathia(12-10) was charged with the loss. He struck out 9 batters in 5 and 1/3 innings despite losing the game. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Zambrano said, 'this was one of those times.' The key at-bat was by Travis Metcalf who disappointed the partisan crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb (his 36th of the season). After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. Brad Lidge earned his 32nd save. The win was credited to Jorge Campillo(7-7) who went 7 innings allowing 1 run. Campillo got help from Frank Francisco who earned his 9th save. Jesse Litsch(5-13) ended up with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. 'We won because we did the little things right.' Cliff McDivitt said after the game. Longoria was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He doubled which scored a run in the 1st inning, emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 4th of the season) in the 3rd inning, slapped a base-hit in the 5th inning and doubled in the 9th inning. Roy Oswalt(15-5) got relief help from Mariano Rivera who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 36th save. The losing pitcher was Justin Verlander(8-8). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Atlanta now has a record of a division leading 90-33. Josh Callahan was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.' ST. That early run support was enough for Scherzer and St. Louis. St. Louis managed 7 hits in their victory. Ryan Rowland-Smith(7-12) was hit with the loss.
