Chad Qualls(4-1) was the winning pitcher with a solid relief performance. He didn't allow much, just 1 hit and no walks in 1 and 2/3 innings. Atlanta had just 6 hits for the afternoon. Qualls was helped out by Mariano Rivera who recorded his 39th save. Gavin Floyd(10-12) took the loss. He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. He stroked a base-hit scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning, doubled in the 7th inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 34th of the season) in the 8th inning. Texas had 11 hits for the afternoon while New York had 6. Doug Davis(4-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 9 hits and 7 walks. The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Washington came out on top in the 10th inning. Nick Markakis slapped a base-hit. Marlon Byrd got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. One out later, Ryan Doumit came up and he was walked intentionally. Howie Kendrick followed and he doubled giving Washington the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Both teams ended up with 6 hits on the afternoon. The victory went to George Sherrill(2-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Kevin Slowey(9-11) was given the loss. He allowed just 2 runs and 5 hits in 9 and 2/3 innings. He allowed only 2 hits and no walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. Oakland made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Heath Bell earned the save, his 9th. Chris Volstad(3-7) was given the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and 6 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings. 'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Nathan Sheets said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really bad.'

The key offensive moment was provided by Jermaine Dye who deflated the crowd as he doubled with all three runners coming home. Cleveland was out-hit by Los Angeles, 11 hits to 8. The victory went to Tim Lincecum(13-10) who went 6 innings, allowing 6 runs. Daisuke Matsuzaka(4-10) ended up with the loss. He struggled with his control issuing 5 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. ST. Derek Lowe(10-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings and allowing 4 runs. Arroyo(6-14) absorbed the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. The score was tied at 6 after nine. Finally, Boston pulled the game out in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Franklin Gutierrez doubled. Jhonny Peralta stepped up next and he drew a walk. Dioner Navarro then singled to load the bases. One out later, Jared Burton came to the plate and let loose a wild pitch making Boston the winners and sending the 35,897 fans home happy. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.
