Ludwick led the offense for Cincinnati. He banged out a single in the 1st inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 3rd inning, ripped a base-knock in the 7th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 31st of the season) in the 9th inning. Florida could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th. The winning pitcher was Mike Mussina(16-9) who allowed 4 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Mussina was helped out by Jenks who recorded his 19th save. The game was decided in the bottom of the 8th inning. After two outs Chris Dickerson tripled. Milton Bradley came to the plate and stroked a one-base hit. Houston threatened in the 9th but San Francisco was able to put down the rally. The victory went to Ryan Dempster(9-14) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Francisco Rodriguez earned the save, his 30th. Jake Westbrook(13-8) took the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 walk. 'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Dempster said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.' Anderson enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He cracked a solo homerun in the 3rd inning, smacked a single in the 7th inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 16th of the season) in the 9th inning. Boston had a total of 8 hits for the game. Danks(13-13) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. The loss was charged to Dan Giese(7-13). He gave up 3 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings. Cain(13-12) put on a good performance. He gave up just 4 hits and 6 walks in 9 innings. Los Angeles had 10 hits for the night. Paul Maholm(11-17) was the loser. He allowed 5 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings. Cain was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight. But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called game!'

Petit(10-10) looked very much in control throughout the night. He allowed only 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings and was touched for 2 homeruns. Cleveland rapped out 12 hits for the night. The losing pitcher was Paul Byrd(4-5). He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Manny Ramirez got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Washington had only 4 hits for the night. The victory was credited to Mike Adams(6-1) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. Joey Devine recorded his 7th save. Arthur Rhodes(3-3) was given the loss in relief. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning. Brett Myers(10-15) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. ST. Smoltz(3-1) pitched a fine game. He allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings improving his ERA from 4.65 to 4.13. Atlanta had a total of 10 hits for the game. Jeff Niemann(0-1) ended up with the loss. He was touched for 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Smoltz - except St. Louis. Brian Cramer lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'
